ABOUT SAINT KEVINS EPISCOPAL CHURCH

OUR HISTORY
Saint Kevin’s Episcopal Church was organized as a congregation in 1955 in the City of Opa Locka, Florida. The first worship service was held at the Optimist Club of Opa Locka Florida, attended by eighteen people. The following year, in 1956, land was purchased at the present location for future construction of church buildings. Shortly after the acquisition worship services were held under the Poinciana tree on the property. In 1957, construction of the present Sanctuary and Parish Hall was started. The men of the congregation made the Altar, pews and kneelers while the women engaged in fundraising for the congregation. Regrettably, the tide of fortune turned on the infant congregation. Between 1959 and 1960, Saint Kevin’s lost half of the families in the congregation, at the request of the old Diocese of South Florida. Twenty families were asked to establish a new congregation in nearby Carol City, Florida (Saint Anthony’s). The racial makeup of Saint Kevin’s since 1955 has evolved. The congregation started out predominantly white, integrated, and now mainly Black members. Present membership consists of African-Americans, Caribbeans/West Indies, South and Central Americans, and members from various countries on the Continent of Africa. The congregation continues to be a beacon of hope and love in the communities of Opa Locka and Miami Garden, Florida. At present Saint Kevin’s is engage in imagining a revitalized and reinvigorated congregation via our strategic planning. The future looks great!
